NABW branding ceremony in Lilongwe

Lilongwe, Malawi, April 29, 2016: From humble beginnings in 1990 with a vision to empower and promote business women in the country, the National Association of Business Women (NABW) now celebrates over four months since it branded as the National Chapter of FEMCOM.
With over 400 paid up members, under the leadership of Chairperson, Towera Jalakasi, NABW was officially branded by then Minister of Gender, Children, Disabilities and Social Welfare, Patricia Kaliati on 15th December 2015 in Lilongwe.
A famed fighter for women empowerment in her own right, Kaliati described the event as big milestone for Malawi.
‘’The branding of NABW as a National Chapter is very important and more important is that the Secretariat of FEMCOM is being hosted in Malawi. It is a big milestone – we cannot let that happen quietly, said the Minister.
NABW must work to ensure that it operates at grassroots and be able to articulate the needs of Malawi women entrepreneurs,’’ said Kaliati.
She added that Government would do everything possible to ensure that NABW’s aspirations are realised in this new arrangement.
Kaliati said government would make sure that the branded NABW was not personalized as was the case in the past as it was regarded as a thing that belonged to certain individuals.
Kaliati also appealed to COMESA to accelerate the process of making the women economic empowerment fund functional so that women in Malawi and the region could start accessing affordable credit.
FEMCOM is a COMESA institution established in 1993 to develop women entrepreneurship in the region and beyond through programmes that promote, encourage and serve the needs of women and their businesses, working in smart collaboration with relevant partners.
Chief Executive Officer for FEMCOM, Katherine Nyangui Ichoya applauded the minister for gracing the branding ceremony saying it showed Government of Malawi’s commitment to seeing its women empowered.
